With the FUELSTAT® on site fuel testing kit all you need is 10 minutes, a flat, clean surface, a pair of latex gloves & a 200 ml sample to discover which bugs are living in your fuel. The easy to interpret, pregnancy-style test gives a negligible, low or high reading which corresponds to the limits laid down in the IATA Guidance Material on Microbial Contamination in Aviation Fuel tanks. This clearly indicates the aircraft’s fuel system status, and what action to take, if any.
IATA Strongly recommends testing of each aircraft fuel tank for microbiological contamination at least once a year.
There are a number of different types of microorganisms that can grow in certain types of fuel. The biggest problem is presented by a filamentous fungus called Hormoconis resinae, (H Res).

Going forward this will enable all parties testing for the presence of Microbial Contamination or otherwise known as any combination of, but not limited to the following; Bacteria, Fungi, Hormoconis resinae (H-res), Diesel Bug or Jet Fuel Fungus to be able to rapidly test on-site and provide closer adherence to the below ASTM recommendation thus reducing the potential for sample degradation.
ASTM D6469 – 14, Para 8.3 – 8.6, Standard Guide for Microbial Contamination in Fuelsand Fuel Systems section advises:
It is recommended that ideally testing should be completed on site within a few minutes of sampling. Recognising that this is not always possible it states that samples should be kept on ice in transit and tested within 4 hrs but no longer than 24 hrs after sampling. Samples stored at higher temperatures, or for longer times, can show the presence of microbial contamination that does not represent actual fuel system conditions.
Testing of Fuel within Standby Generators is also recognised by British Standards Institute with update of BS 5410-3:2016
The British Standards Institute has just issued an update to BS 5410-3:2016 and to our knowledge is the first national standards body to reference testing for fuel quality and suitability indeed Section 18.10 headed Fuel Filtration – Filters states:
Note 1 – Since the introduction of BioFuel (FAME) into fuel tanks the quality and life expectancy of fuels has been adversely affected as FAME is hydroscopic so any water in the fuel goes into suspension. This water can lead to injector pump damage and facilitate the growth of bacteria which blocks conventional filters.
Note 2 – Removing as much water as possible preserves the quality of the fuel.
There should be a fuel polishing system to help maintain the fuel quality. If there is no polishing system the fuel should be tested every three months.
Fuels for emergency generators should be tested every six months for quality and suitability.

Previously called Cladosporium resinae, and more commonly referred to as “Jet Fuel Fungus”. H Res is a fungus that thrives in aviation fuel. It requires only a minimal amount of water content in the fuel to grow and will cause filter blockages, gauging errors and tank corrosion if left unchecked. Bacteria and other types of fungi, particularly some yeasts can also cause problems in fuel tanks, usually acting as a consortium. The objective of the test is to provide rapid screening of fuel samples (water in fuel or fuel), giving a quick and accurate assessment of H Res, bacteria & other fungi including yeasts in the fuel tank. This test is unlike current growth-based tests, which require a minimum of 72 hours to provide any results. The test measures the amount of active growth in the sample and provides actions and alert levels.
The FUELSTAT® resinae PLUS test measures the amount of different types of contamination: H Res, bacteria and fungi actively growing in the sample and reports that as the weight of material in the sample. This is a newer, more accurate measurement system than the old Colony Forming Unit (CFU) count.
